Click to enlarge... While Intuit offers several tools to securely transfer data to us, sometimes other solutions are needed. That’s especially true if your QuickBooks data file is over 200 Mb in size or you use an older version of QuickBooks that has become obsolete under Intuit’s service discontinuation policy. We’ve got those needs covered with secure data upload and storage using the same network system that supports Amazon.com’s family of web sites. All files are transferred in encrypted form1 and secured with multiple passwords. That allows us to securely transmit and store individual files up to 5 Gb in size on a very fast, reliable network with 99.99% availability that tolerates no single point of failure.

Once you’ve ordered our QB Inspection or QB Tune Up service, ordered custom reports, or any other service that requires giving us an electronic copy of your QuickBooks data file, we’ll contact you and provide you a download link to our file transfer software. The installer will run and install a program that will give you a simple, secure connection to our servers. You’ll access that connection as a network drive in Windows Explorer.

When you run the installer, you’ll follow these steps:

  1. A Welcome screen will summarize what will take place.
  2. Enter the domain, username, and password to authenticate your account. The domain is always qbgarage and the username and password are unique values we’ll supply to you.
  3. Configure the program as a network drive and choose a network drive letter.
  4. Accept the notice that your installation is complete.
  5. The network drive you created should now be available in Windows Explorer.

By default, our program installs as My Secure Backup in a folder of the same name. When you run the program, it will appear in your system tray, and you can configure the program or exit it by right-clicking on the system tray icon and selecting the appropriate menu choice. If you exit the program, the network drive location that you created will no longer be available until you run the program again. One important note: the program by default will remember the password you enter so you don’t have to enter it each time you run it. You can change this behavior and control the configuration generally from the Configure menu.

Once the program is successfully installed, open Windows Explorer and click on the network drive that’s labeled with the username you entered above. Then, open a second instance of Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder that contains the files you’d like to copy to our networked storage. With both windows open, hold down the Ctrl Ctrl key and drag the files to be copied from your local disk to our network storage. You are securely copying files to a network location (or bucket in the the language of our network) that is private to only your data.

That’s all there is to it. Once you’ve uploaded your data, we’ll quickly get to work.

  1. We use 256-bit AES encryption, an industry standard for secure transmissions. [↩]
