The QuickBooks company file (.qbw) must be stored on a local hard disk or the hard disk of a server running the QuickBooks Database Server Manager. Locating the company file on other types of storage media may produce this error. Examples of company file locations that can produce this error are:
- USB or thumb drives
- Zip drives
- Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices
