How Do I Stop Windows Firewall From Blocking Services Used By QuickBooks?

Chief Mechanic · August 24, 2010 ·

In a multi-user environment there are 2 QuickBooks services that need to be able to communicate with the computer on which the company file (.qbw) is located. For QuickBooks 2009, these services are QBCFMonitorService and QuickBooksDB19. For earlier versions of QuickBooks, the service QuickBooks19 will be named QuickBooksXX, where XX is replaced by 2 digits.

Windows Firewall can block these services, preventing normal multi-user operation. Some common QuickBooks errors that may be associated with firewall issues are listed at the bottom of this post.

To stop this unwanted behavior, the solution is to add both services to the Exceptions list in Windows Firewall on both the computer hosting the company file (.qbw) and each workstation in the multi-user configuration. The Exceptions list is a list of programs that Windows Firewall will not block. The executable files (including their normal folder locations) are:

C:Program FilesIntuitQuickBooks2009QBDBMgrN.exe
C:Program FilesCommon FilesIntuitQuickBooksQBCFMonitorService.exe

Start with the computer hosting the company file and proceed to each workstation in turn, completing the steps outlined below on each computer.

To add these programs to the Windows Firewall Exceptions list in Windows XP, click the Start button and open the Control Panel. Choose Windows Firewall in Classic View or Security Center in Category View. Click on the Exceptions tab as shown below.

Click the Add Program… button to add the first service to the Exceptions list. Click the Browse… button and navigate to the location of your QuickBooks program. For QuickBooks 2009, this is usually:

C:Program FilesIntuitQuickBooks2009

Choose QBDBMgrN.exe from the list and click Open. Click Ok to add this service to the Exceptions list.

Repeat this process to add the next service to the Exceptions list. Click the Add Program… button and navigate to the location for common files used by Intuit products. For QuickBooks 2009, this is usually:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesIntuitQuickBooks

Choose QBCFMonitorService.exe from the list and click Open. Click Ok to add this service to the Exceptions list.

Once you’ve successfully added both services to the Exceptions list, they’ll appear in the list of programs and services as shown below:

Repeat these steps to add both services to the Exceptions list on each workstation in the multi-user configuration.

Firewall problems may manifest themselves as the following QuickBooks errors:

  • H202

What Does Error Code H202 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · August 24, 2010 ·

According to Intuit, Error Code H202 indicates that QuickBooks can’t access the company file, which is located on another computer. This error code has multiple possible causes:

  • security software (e. g., a firewall) is blocking access to computer where the company file is located
  • QuickBooks can’t obtain the Internet Protocol (IP)address of the computer where the company file is located
  • the .ND file is damaged
  • incorrect hosting configuration settings

There are a number of troubleshooting steps to resolve this error that are discussed in detail in the Intuit knowledge base article linked below. Several of these steps involve checking the Hosting setting. To verify the Hosting setting, press F2 while QuickBooks is running to display the Product Information window. The Local Server Information block shows the Hosting setting at the lower left of the window.

What Is the Connection Diagnostic Tool and How Do I Use It?

Chief Mechanic · August 24, 2010 ·

The QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic Tool is a program to troubleshoot errors you might receive when opening a QuickBooks company file (.qbw) in a multi-user environment.

It only works with QuickBooks 2008 or newer and Enterprise Solutions 8.0 or newer.

It’s designed to troubleshoot error codes H202, H505, and 6000 series errors, such as error code -6130,0.

You can download the QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic Tool directly from Intuit. Once installed on the same computer on which the company file is located, the tool can diagnose and, in some cases, repair connection problems.

What Does Error Code 6123, 0 Mean?

Chief Mechanic · June 13, 2010 ·

According to Intuit, Error Code 6123,0 “Connection to the QuickBooks company file has been lost” occurs in multi-user environments caused by one of the following:

  • the network connection between the computer on which the error occurred and the server hosting the company file was disrupted
  • firewall software is blocking a port necessary to communicate with the server hosting the company file
  • multiple instances of the QuickBooks database service are running
  • QuickBooks data or program files are damaged
  • the computer name on the computer hosting the QuickBooks company file was changed while hosting was turned on
  • the McAfee Privacy Service is installed with the Block Web Bugs filter option selected

The last 2 possible causes are the easiest to troubleshoot. The Block Web Bugs filter in McAfee’s software is incompatible with QuickBooks and needs to be turned off. If the computer name on the computer hosting the company file was changed, close all applications, reboot that computer, and then first stop and re-start multi-user mode. Specific steps for these possible causes are discussed in this Intuit knowledge base article.

For specific troubleshooting steps to resolve the other possible causes of this error, consult this Intuit knowledge base article.
