What Are the System Requirements To Operate QuickBooks?

System requirements for QuickBooks products vary by version.

The minimum system requirements can be found in various Intuit knowledgebase articles based on the product version:

  • QuickBooks 2010 and Enterprise Solutions 10.0
  • QuickBooks 2009 and Enterprise Solutions 9.0
  • QuickBooks 2008 and Enterprise Solutions 8.0

System requirements include:

  • operating systems supported
  • processor, RAM, display, and free disk space requirements
  • CD drive specifications for installation from optical media
  • network requirements
  • additional software requirements, such as Microsoft .NET runtime environment
  • compatibility with other QuickBooks software such as Point of Sale (POS)
  • third-party office productivity software compatibility, such as Microsoft Office
  • firewall and anti-virus compatibility

What Does Error Code 1603 Mean?

According to Intuit, there are several possible causes for Error Code 1603:

  • the QuickBooks installer didn’t detect a version of Adobe Flash 7 or greater installed on your computer
  • the QuickBooks installer didn’t detect that the required Microsoft .NET 1.1 SP1 has been installed
  • you clicked Abort after receiving another error such as error code 1328
  • your copy of the Microsoft Windows installer is corrupt
  • your QuickBooks installation is damaged

To determine the version of Adobe’s Flash player you have installed, you can use Adobe’s Version Test tool.

You can also use Adobe’s Flash Settings Manager to control the operation of your Flash player.

What Does Error Code 1304 Mean?

According to Intuit, Error 1304 can occur when installing or updating QuickBooks.

It is accompanied by this message:

"Error writing to file [filename]. Verify that you have access to that directory."

It is caused by either:

  1. a damaged CD
  2. a problem with the CD drive itself
  3. a damaged Microsoft .NET component

The troubleshooting steps to resolve this error depend on whether you received the error installing QuickBooks from a CD or from a download.

If you were installing from a CD, first attempt to copy files from the installation CD to your hard disk and proceed to complete the installation.  The steps to copy these files are discussed in this Intuit knowledge base article.

If you downloaded QuickBooks and are not installing the program from a CD, a component of the Microsoft .NET framework may be damaged.  In this instance, consult this Intuit knowledge base article for information on repairing your .NET framework.

What Does a Fatal Error Referring To the License Utility Mean?

According to Intuit, the following error can occur when starting QuickBooks:

Fatal Error: Function: LicenseUtility::Initialize Signature:bool_cdecl LicenseUtility::Initialize(void) File:..srcLicenseUtility.cpp Line:431

The error has multiple possible causes:

  1. Microsoft’s .NET framework is not functioning properly
  2. Windows Protected Storage service is stopped or disabled
  3. Your QuickBooks installation is damaged
  4. Your Windows operating system is damaged
